JPs serve the ACT community, primarily by witnessing documents
and administering oaths and affirmations to persons wishing
to make affidavits in proceedings before courts.
The ACT Attorney General considers a range of factors when
appointing JPs. These include:
- permanent residency in the ACT;
- availability to serve the ACT community;
- the need for the applicant to be of good character and standing
- in the community; and
- Australian citizenship.
JPs must be publicly available at all reasonable times. This
means that they need to be available after hours, on weekends
and, if possible, during business hours (with agreement of
their employer).
